How to Improve Your Portfolio

Last updated: April 2026

Your portfolio is the first impression a client has of your work. A well-organized portfolio doesn't just show what you can do—it helps the client quickly determine whether you're the right person for the job. In this guide, we'll explain how to structure your portfolio to attract more inquiries.

Why does this matter? Profiles with portfolios organized into lists receive significantly more proposals than those with only individual samples. Clients want to quickly understand your specialty and style—the less they have to search, the more likely they are to contact you.

Grid View vs. List View: What's the Difference?

Promakers lets you upload your work in two different formats. Understanding when to use each one is key to building a portfolio that converts.

Sample

A single track or specific reference. Ideal for showcasing a particular release or a specific piece of work by an artist.

  • A single audio track
  • No additional categories
  • Good for specific references
  • Harder to read as a whole
In short— Individual samples are useful, but playlists are what really showcase your expertise. If a client is looking for a pop producer, they want to see a playlist titled “Pop Production” with several tracks—not 10 individual samples without context.

How to Categorize Your Listings Effectively

The key to a good listing is choosing a clear category that customers can recognize right away. You can organize your listings in three ways:

By music genre

Organize your work by musical style. This is especially useful if you work in multiple genres and want to help each type of client quickly find what interests them.

Pop Production
PopMusic producer
▷ Track by Artist A3:12
▷ Track featuring Artist B2:58
▷ Track featuring Artist C3:40
Hip-Hop Beats
Hip-HopBeatmaker
▷ Beat 12:30
▷ Beat 22:15
▷ Beat 32:45
Rock & Indie
RockGuitarist
▷ Track on Side A4:05
▷ Track with B-side3:50
▷ C-band track3:22

By type of service

If you offer several different services (mixing, mastering, production, etc.), create a separate list for each one. That way, clients will know exactly what they can ask you to do.

Mixing Portfolio
Mix
▷ Mix 13:20
▷ Mix 22:55
Mastering Portfolio
Mastering
▷ Master 14:10
▷ Master 23:35
Full Production
Production
▷ Full production 13:48
▷ Full production 24:02

By skill or instrument

If your unique selling point is a specific technical skill (string arrangements, drum programming, songwriting, etc.), listing it separately makes it much more visible.

Tip — You don't have to choose just one way to organize your content. You can have one list by genre and another by service. The important thing is that each list has a clear identity: customers should be able to understand what it contains just by reading the title.

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a Listing

Step 1 — Log in to your portfolio

  1. Go to your profile page by clicking on your avatar in the menu → My Profile.
  2. On the PORTFOLIO tab, click the ADD button.
  3. The "Upload Samples" wizard will open, featuring three sections: Sample Details, Audio Samples, and Sample Details.

Step 2 — Sample details

  1. Upload a cover image that represents the listing (PNG or JPG, up to 4 MB).
  2. Write a clear and descriptive title, such as: “Pop Production,” “Mixing — Urban,” or “Rock Electric Guitar.”
  3. Under "Portfolio Type," select " Listing." This option groups multiple listings together and boosts your visibility.
  4. Write a description of at least 50 characters explaining what kind of work the listing involves and what you can offer the client.
  5. Click SAVE to continue.

Step 3 — Audio Samples

  1. Click ADD NEW to upload each track.
  2. Upload MP3 files up to 3 minutes long or 10 MB per file.
  3. For optimal quality, use MP3 files encoded at 256 kbps or higher (we recommend 320 kbps).
  4. You can upload up to 5 tracks per list. Choose the ones that best represent that category.
  5. Click CONTINUE once you've added your files.

Step 4 — Sample Details

  1. Select the skills you used in these projects (up to 5).
  2. List any other people who were involved in the production, if applicable.
  3. Add the music genres from the list (up to 5). Be specific: “Urban pop” is better than just “Pop.”
  4. Click SAVE to post the listing on your profile.
Remember— the more you fill out the skills and categories fields, the easier it will be for clients (and the Promakers search engine) to find your profile when they're looking for a professional like you.

Common mistakes to avoid

Mixing genres or services in a single listing. If a listing is called “My Work” and includes pop, reggaeton, and film soundtracks, the client won’t understand what you specialize in. One listing, one clear category.
Generic titles like “Demo 1” or “Sample.” The title is the first thing the client sees. “Latin Pop — Full Production 2024” conveys much more than “New Work.”
Uploading low-quality audio tracks. A 128 kbps MP3 sounds bad on any speaker and gives an unprofessional impression. Always use 256 kbps or higher.
Leave the "Skills" and "Genres" fields blank. These fields power the Promakers search engine. Without them, your profile won't appear when clients filter by specialty or genre.
A portfolio with just a single, isolated sample. A portfolio with 3–4 well-organized samples conveys much more experience and confidence than 15 unstructured, isolated samples.
In a nutshell — Think of your portfolio as a storefront. If the storefront is tidy and has a clear message, customers will come in. If it’s cluttered and disorganized, they’ll walk right by.

Frequently asked questions

How many listings can I have in my portfolio?

There is no set limit. We recommend between 3 and 6 distinct listings. It’s better to have many listings with a few high-quality tracks than to have just a few with mixed content.

Can I include both individual samples and lists in the same portfolio?

Yes. Your portfolio can include both types. Individual samples are useful for showcasing a specific piece of work (a special collaboration, a standout project), while lists provide a structured way to highlight your areas of expertise.

Can I edit a listing after I've posted it?

Yes. You can edit the title, description, audio tracks, and details about your skills and genres at any time from your portfolio. The changes will appear immediately on your public profile.

Does my portfolio affect how I appear in search results?

Yes. The "Genres" and "Skills" fields in your listings directly influence how the Promakers search engine indexes your profile. A comprehensive and well-organized portfolio increases your visibility to clients looking for the type of service you offer.
